Advancement
Advancement in the Sea Cadet Corps is earned through dedication, hard work, and a commitment to growth. To move up in rank, cadets must complete required coursework, participate actively in drills, pass physical readiness tests, and demonstrate leadership potential. Additionally, cadets are expected to attend at least one advanced training each year—this hands-on experience is not only a core part of the program but also a requirement for promotion. Each rank builds on the last, giving cadets the opportunity to grow in skill, responsibility, and confidence.
Beyond the checklists, cadets are expected to live out the core values of honor, courage, and commitment. Advancement is about more than just completing tasks—it’s about showing initiative, being a team player, and setting a strong example for others. Progressing through the ranks reflects a cadet’s readiness to lead, serve, and take on greater challenges within the Sea Cadet program and beyond.
Physical Readiness
Physical fitness is a vital part of the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps experience, building the strength, endurance, and discipline necessary for success both in and out of uniform. Staying in shape throughout the year not only improves a cadet’s personal health and confidence, but also ensures they are prepared to meet the physical demands of training. All Sea Cadet trainings require cadets to have a current, passing Physical Readiness Test (PRT) on file, and more physically demanding trainings may require higher performance levels in order to qualify.
Passing the Physical Readiness Test and maintaining an up-to-date Swimming Qualification are key components of demonstrating readiness and responsibility. Any training that takes place on or in the water will require cadets to meet specific swim qualification classes, ensuring they can safely participate in maritime environments. These standards help prepare cadets for real-world challenges and promote a culture of excellence, safety, and personal accountability across the program.
General Knowledge
Advancement in the Sea Cadet Corps is earned through dedication, hard work, and a commitment to growth. To advance in rank, cadets must complete required coursework, participate actively in drills and trainings, pass physical readiness tests, and demonstrate solid leadership potential. Each rank builds on the one before it, giving cadets the chance to grow in responsibility, knowledge, and confidence.
In addition to completing academic and physical requirements, cadets are expected to live out the core values of honor, courage, and commitment. Showing initiative, maintaining a positive attitude, and setting an example for others are just as important as checking the boxes. Advancement is not automatic—it’s a reflection of a cadet’s readiness to take on greater responsibility and lead by example.
